about

"Genmaicha: At The Opal Seashore" is the fourth album by Aalfang and was released as MS26 on the Mystery Sea label as a limited CDR in 2005. Now it is available in digital form for the first time.

Compared to the previous, more collage-like 12 Seepferdchen album, this release represents an attempt to develop - and maintain - a coherent mood over the length of an album. The motifs of flowing, perhaps sinking, but definitely getting wet, replace the fragmented, sometimes laboured, and restless nature of its predecessor. I was (and am) glad that Daniel from Mystery Sea saw it as a fitting addition to his series and published "Genmaicha".

Some passages and moods are obviously inspired by the double album "Zeit" by Tangerine Dream from 1972. The theme of tea was the perfect opportunity for me to give this new music a (loose) narrative framework that relates to (my) everyday life.

As part of the digital re-release, I listened to the album again after almost 20 years. The tea bag has been in the cup for a long time. I hope the whole thing hasn't turned bitter now. Of course, after all these years you hear things that you would do differently nowadays. But I haven't really touched the old tracks - from a tenderly light remaster that doesn't detract from the original atmosphere.

In any case, I took the opportunity to dedicate two new tracks to another of my favourite teas. The complementary album "Lapsang Souchong: That Smoke On Rusty Water" was recorded and mixed in December 2023 - so the infusion is still fresh. You can probably quickly tell that I've been listening to a lot of Philip Glass during this time (finally, after several decades). But since you can only love or loathe Chinese smoked tea, the new music that goes with it is a bit scratchy and perhaps less accessible than its 2005 counterpart. I hope you can appreciate both parts. The original cover was created by Daniel, the new photography was done by me.

I would like to thank Daniel and Marcus very much.

Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf Germany

has been the vehicle for more or less unusual sounds with a narrative approach since 2004.

The package contains prick descriptions, found field footage, dodgy drones, allaying ambient, and all sorts of things from the bargain bin of serious music. The main bricoleur is Mirko Uhlig, occasionally supported by Her and Him.
